Washer Leaking Water: Causes & Fixes
Where the puddle sits tells you what failed. Front leaks point at the door, back leaks point at the hoses, and under-machine leaks point at the pump.
Before you start: unplug the appliance and shut off the water supply. Do not open panels that expose mains wiring. Anything involving gas, 240 V circuits or the sealed refrigerant system must be done by a licensed technician.
Eight likely causes, most common first
- Loose fill hose connection. The rubber washer inside the coupling dries out and drips.
- Door boot seal torn or dirty. Front load machines leak at the bottom of the door.
- Detergent dispenser overloaded. Too much detergent foams over the drawer.
- Drain hose slipped off the standpipe. The hose kicks out during drain.
- Drain pump seal or housing cracked. Water appears under the front of the machine.
- Tub seal or bearing failure. Water streaks down from under the drum.
- Washer not level. Water sloshes over the front lip.
- House drain backing up. Water comes back up the standpipe.
Work through it in this order
- Stop the cycle. Press POWER once and wait for the drum to stop before you touch anything.
- Unplug the machine. If it is hard-wired, switch the breaker off. Water and live wiring do not mix.
- Shut both water valves at the wall if you will be touching hoses.
- Check the free things first. Hose position, hose kinks, the load balance, and the level of the machine. These cost nothing and cover most cases.
- Then check the accessible parts. Inlet screens, pump inlet and drain hose can be reached without opening the cabinet.
- Only then consider a part. Match the part number to the model plate before ordering.
