Washer Won't Spin: Causes & Fixes
The spin stage is the last thing a washer does, so almost anything upstream can stop it. A machine that will not spin is usually either out of balance, not drained, or not locked.
Eight likely causes, most common first
- Load out of balance. One heavy item — a bath mat, a blanket — pulls the drum off centre and the washer aborts the spin.
- Washer not level. The machine rocks on one corner and the out-of-balance sensor trips every time.
- Lid lock not engaging. No confirmed lock means no spin, for safety.
- Water still in the drum. The washer will not spin with standing water. See the drain page first.
- Drive belt worn or slipped. Common on older belt-drive models.
- Drive hub or splutch stripped. The motor turns but the drum does not.
- Suspension rods worn. The drum sags and bangs, so the washer limits spin speed.
- Control or lid switch fault. The machine never gets the signal that it is safe to spin.
Work through it in this order
- Stop the cycle. Press POWER once and wait for the drum to stop before you touch anything.
- Unplug the machine. If it is hard-wired, switch the breaker off. Water and live wiring do not mix.
- Shut both water valves at the wall if you will be touching hoses.
- Check the free things first. Hose position, hose kinks, the load balance, and the level of the machine. These cost nothing and cover most cases.
- Then check the accessible parts. Inlet screens, pump inlet and drain hose can be reached without opening the cabinet.
- Only then consider a part. Match the part number to the model plate before ordering.
