What you will see

Most likely causes, in order

Listed from the most common and cheapest to check, to the least common and most expensive. Work down the list — do not jump to the last item because it is the one that sounds serious.

  1. Blocked or kinked drain hose
  2. Drain hose inserted too deep or raised too high
  3. Debris in the drain pump
  4. Failed drain pump

Safe checks you can do

Before you start: unplug the appliance and shut off the water supply. Do not open panels that expose mains wiring. Anything involving gas, 240 V circuits or the sealed refrigerant system must be done by a licensed technician.
  1. Unplug the washer first.
  2. Inspect the full length of the drain hose for kinks or a crushed section.
  3. Reset the hose so 4 in (100 mm) sits in the standpipe and the outlet is under 96 in (2.4 m).
  4. Check the pump inlet for lint, coins, or a sock.

When to call a technician

The hose is clear and positioned correctly but the pump does not run or does not move water.

Also call if you see or smell burning, if the breaker trips when the washer starts, or if water has reached any electrical part. Those are stop-now conditions, not check-it-later conditions.
