Whirlpool Error Codes: Full List & Meanings
13 codes confirmed in Whirlpool's published troubleshooting tables. 10 are self-service checks; 3 report an internal fault.
Self-service codes
| Code | Meaning | First check |
|---|---|---|
F5E2 | The lid lock will not engage. | Open the lid and check for any garment caught at the front edge or under the hinge. |
F5E3 | The lid lock will not release. | Take everything off the top of the washer — baskets, bottles, folded laundry. |
F6E2 | The user interface panel cannot talk to the main control board. | Unplug the washer, or switch the breaker off. |
F6E3 | Same communication failure as F6E2 — the UI and main control board are out of sync. | Cut power at the breaker for 5 minutes. |
F8E1 | The washer is taking too long to fill. | Turn both hot and cold supply valves fully counter-clockwise. |
F8E6 | The lid was left open. | Close the lid fully and press POWER to clear the display. |
F9E1 | The washer is taking too long to drain. | Straighten the drain hose and check it is not pinched behind the washer. |
LF | Long Fill. | Open both supply valves all the way. |
dr | Drain problem — the washer cannot empty the drum in the time allowed. | Unplug the washer first. |
drn | Drain problem, long form of the same display message as dr. | Unplug the washer. |
Technician codes
| Code | Meaning | Why |
|---|---|---|
F1E1 | The main control board (ACU) reported an internal fault. | The code returns after one power cycle. This is a board-level fault with no user-serviceable part. |
F2E5 | The user interface panel and the main control board do not match. | Always. This code means a part mismatch inside the machine. |
F3E1 | The washer cannot read the water level. | The code returns after one rinse cycle. The pressure sensor path is internal. |

How Whirlpool codes are built
A code like F9E1 splits into two parts: the letter-number group before the E names the subsystem, and the group after it names the specific failure inside that subsystem. That is why F9E1 (drain) and F8E1 (fill) look similar but have nothing to do with each other. Short codes like LF and dr are plain-text abbreviations the display uses instead of the F-format.
Other brands
Why code lists differ between brands
Whirlpool Corporation builds several brands on shared washer platforms, so most codes are common across the group — F9E1 means a long drain on any of them. But the control software is not identical. One brand may use F2E5 where a sibling uses F2E3 for what is functionally the same board mismatch fault.
That is why these pages are split by brand even when the underlying table overlaps. A search for “whirlpool F2E3” deserves an answer about Whirlpool, not a redirect to a page about a different badge.
What a code does not tell you
A fault code reports what the machine detected, not which part to buy. Two different failures can raise the same code: a drain code can come from a kinked hose, a blocked pump or a failed pump motor, and the display cannot tell those apart. Work the causes in order from cheapest to check, and stop as soon as one produces a change in behaviour.
Equally, the absence of a code does not mean nothing is wrong. A slow fill that finishes inside the time limit, or a drain that is sluggish but completes, never trips a threshold and never shows a code — the symptom is the only signal you get.
If your code is not listed
13 codes is what we could confirm in Whirlpool's published troubleshooting material. Manufacturers define more codes than they print for consumers: the full table lives in the service manual issued to authorised technicians. We do not reproduce codes we cannot source, because a guessed meaning sends you to replace the wrong component.
If your display shows something not on this list, write it down exactly as it appears, then start from the symptom guides — the behaviour of the machine narrows the fault faster than an undocumented code will.
