What you will see

Most likely causes, in order

Listed from the most common and cheapest to check, to the least common and most expensive. Work down the list — do not jump to the last item because it is the one that sounds serious.

  1. Drain hose kinked, crushed, or blocked
  2. Drain hose end pushed more than 4.5 in (114 mm) into the standpipe
  3. Drain hose end higher than 96 in (2.4 m) above the floor
  4. Lint and debris blocking the drain pump filter
  5. Drain pump impeller jammed or worn out

Safe checks you can do

Before you start: unplug the appliance and shut off the water supply. Do not open panels that expose mains wiring. Anything involving gas, 240 V circuits or the sealed refrigerant system must be done by a licensed technician.
  1. Straighten the drain hose and check it is not pinched behind the washer.
  2. Pull the hose end out of the standpipe so only about 4 in sits inside.
  3. Make sure the hose outlet is between 39 in and 96 in (1 m and 2.4 m) above the floor.
  4. With the washer unplugged, check the drain hose and pump inlet for lint or a small garment.

When to call a technician

The hose is clear and correctly positioned but the drum still will not empty.

Also call if you see or smell burning, if the breaker trips when the washer starts, or if water has reached any electrical part. Those are stop-now conditions, not check-it-later conditions.
